The Island (2025)

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A shrieking sound abruptly cut off my celebration and turned the blood in my veins to ice.

In the darkness, hundreds of glowing yellow eyes opened. All of them were staring directly at me.

Disaster strikes a passenger plane bound for Australia, leaving only one survivor. Completely alone, he must struggle to stay alive, confronting the hidden dangers of an unknown, deserted island. With no hope of rescue, he must learn to find food, water, and shelter from the relentless elements—and, most terrifying of all, defend himself against whatever lurks in the shadows of the forest.

The Island is translated from the debut novel of Maja Nór Salómon Nielsen (b. 1893), Øen, written in collaboration with her son Malthe (b. 2012). The story is inspired by Malthe’s own Robinsonade.

Once again, Maja asked me for an honest review of her Robinsonade novel The Island — and I’m happy to say that she once again proves how skilled she is at writing survival stories.

In The Island, we follow a young man who is about to set off on a journey he has been looking forward to for a long time. An adventure filled with excitement and expectations. But everything changes when his plane crashes, leaving him completely alone on a deserted island.

This story really made me reflect on how dependent we are on modern conveniences. We live in a world where we can Google anything, watch how-to videos on YouTube, and have food delivered straight to our door. On the island, none of that exists. Survival depends on the most basic needs — and on keeping a realistic and clear mindset when everything familiar is gone.

The book is easy to read and very approachable, making it suitable for both young readers and adults. I especially loved the way the prologue and epilogue are written — they add depth and closure to the story. Nature plays a beautiful and powerful role, and I really enjoyed reading about how the protagonist learns to coexist with animals we don’t normally encounter. Along the way, he even gains a companion — a friend for life.

A detail I truly loved: The Island is inspired by Maja’s son’s own Robinsonade, which you can read about at the end of the book. Such a meaningful and heartfelt touch 🤍

A strong and thoughtful survival story that reminds us how fragile — and resilient — humans can be.
